Xsan Filesystem Access ✦ Ultimate & Easy
Xsan Filesystem Access: Architecture and Administration
3. Inspecting Filesystem Statistics and Quotas
While Fibre Channel is the traditional standard, Xsan has evolved to support alternative access methods:
Fix:
TCP Port 311/312:
Used for Xsan administration and secure server management. xsan filesystem access
- The MDC has a stale reservation. Reboot the active MDC (failover first).
TCP 56610
: Specifically designated by Apple as a common port for interacting with Xsan file systems. Xsan Filesystem Access: Architecture and Administration

- Single-source metadata controller: Ensure MDCs (primary and failover) are on dedicated, reliable hardware with redundant networking; keep clocks synchronized (NTP).
- Network design: Use separate, high-performance networks for storage (Fibre Channel/iSCSI) and metadata/control traffic; isolate management interfaces.
- Mount options & tuning: Use macOS-recommended mount options; tune client cache settings and application I/O patterns for concurrent workloads.
- Directory services: Integrate with an authoritative directory (AD/OD) to ensure consistent UID/GID mappings across clients.
- Backups & snapshots: Implement LUN-level snapshots and regular backups; ensure backups quiesce applications or use filesystem-aware snapshot tools.
- Testing: Test failover, metadata controller failback, and client reconnection behavior in a maintenance window before production usage.
