The Artisan Behind the Fabric
- Flow: Slightly dry to moderate. It won’t gush, which suits smaller nibs and controlled writing. Requires a clean, well-tuned feed.
- Lubrication: Average. Not scratchy, but not buttery smooth.
- Drying time: Around 15–20 seconds on Rhodia (medium nib); faster on absorbent paper.
- Water resistance: Very low. A few drops of water will wash away most of the ink, leaving a faint gray ghost.
- Feathering & Bleed-through: Minimal on good paper (Tomoe River, Midori, Rhodia). On cheap copy paper, slight feathering but no bleed-through with fine nibs.
Ittetsu did not use traditional tipping materials (like Iridium). Instead, he ground the stainless steel or titanium directly into a long, tapered point. This creates a "naginate" (sword-like) geometry. The slit is often cut extremely deep into the nib to allow for a surprising amount of flex, despite the needlepoint tip.
