Step 3: Create a "Starters" Folder

Duplicate your top 10 favorite Sublab presets into a folder named "00 Favorites." This ensures you never scroll past the good stuff. Click the "Save" icon in the preset browser

  1. Start with the context: Decide whether the sub must be pure low-end or audible on small speakers; choose layering accordingly.
  2. Use a clean phase-aligned sine for fundamental: Ensures strong mono low energy and avoids cancellation.
  3. Add a separate transient/attack layer: Use a click, short saw, or processed sample to create audible punch without affecting the sub’s low frequencies.
  4. Control harmonic content wisely: Use filtering and gentle saturation to add harmonics only as needed; excessive mids can muddy the mix.
  5. Mono the lowest octaves: Keep sub fundamentals mono (below ~120 Hz) to avoid phase issues and weak low end on playback systems.
  6. Keep modulation subtle in low range: Heavy LFOs on pitch can blur the sub; apply movement to harmonics or filter rather than the fundamental.
  7. Use keytracking for consistent timbre: Adjust filter cutoff or level across keyboard so low notes don’t become overly boomy.
  8. Check on multiple systems: Test on subwoofer, studio monitors, laptop speakers, and headphones to ensure translation.
  9. Provide useful macros: Map performance controls (drive, filter, attack) so users can adapt presets quickly in a mix.
  10. Document preset purpose and tips: Include intended genre, root note preference, and recommended processing (e.g., EQ, sidechain) in preset notes.
