Obsessed (2014) is a South Korean erotic thriller set in 1969, during the height of the Vietnam War. Directed by Kim Dae-woo, it follows a decorated war hero, Colonel Kim Jin-pyeong, who finds himself trapped in a suffocating marriage and struggling with post-traumatic stress. His life takes a drastic turn when he meets Jong Ga-heun, the wife of his ambitious subordinate.
Jong Ga-heun (Lim Ji-yeon)
Lim Ji-yeon delivers a breakout performance. Initially appearing as a timid mouse, she transforms into the film’s moral compass. Her obsession is not lust, but survival and genuine affection. In a world where she is a possession (to her husband and the military), the Colonel is the first person to see her as a woman. Vietnamese female viewers, in particular, have praised her arc as devastatingly realistic.
Visual Language and The Gaze
The cinematography plays a crucial role in establishing the "obsession." The film is bathed in a nostalgic, slightly washed-out palette, evoking a memory or a dream that is slowly rotting. The camera often lingers on the repressive structure of the military village—the high walls, the geometry of the houses, the uniformity of the residents. This visual restriction makes the chaotic, messy passion between the leads feel like a rebellion against the very architecture of their lives.
