Troubleshooting "MakeMKV Automatic HK Downloading is Disabled or Failed" Update

• Cannot open new Blu-ray/UHD discs – MakeMKV will fail with “The volume key is unknown for this disc.”
• Existing discs already opened successfully continue to work (cached keys).
• Log file shows repeated download attempts every few days (if enabled).

1. Open MakeMKV → View → Preferences → General.
2. Ensure “Allow contacting web server for updates” is checked.
3. If it was unchecked → check it, restart MakeMKV.

1. Close MakeMKV.
2. Navigate to the MakeMKV data directory (see above).
3. Delete or rename the file _private_data.tar (or settings.conf on older versions).
4. Relaunch MakeMKV. It will recreate default settings. Re-enter your registration key if needed, but leave HK retrieval on "Automatic."
