Review of Evan-Moor Daily Phonics, Grade 2 Evan-Moor Daily Phonics, Grade 2
- I Do: Project the PDF on a smartboard/screen. Model how to solve the first problem thinking aloud (e.g., "I see a picture of a rain cloud. I hear /r/ /ā/ /n/. I know 'ai' makes the long a sound, so I will circle the word 'rain'.").
- We Do: Solve the second problem together as a class or with the student.
- You Do: Let the student complete the rest independently.
- Prompt: Read the sentence. "I will put the m _ _ l on the tr _ _ ."
- Task: Choose "ai" or "ay."
- Outcome: The student realizes that "ai" is usually in the middle (mail) and "ay" is at the end (tray). This visual phonics rule sticks because the worksheet is so cleanly laid out.
By second grade, students encounter increasingly complex text. The simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words of kindergarten and first grade are replaced by multi-syllabic words, tricky vowel teams, and irregular spelling patterns. Without a "daily" rhythm of practice, these new challenges can lead to reading frustration.
The program follows an explicit, scaffolded instructional model. Each of the 32 weekly units
