- Standard SD Card (Not SDHC or SDXC for older units?): Caution: Early RNS 315 units (pre-2011) only read standard SD (2GB max). Later units support SDHC (32GB max). For a v.4 map (approx. 4.5GB to 6.5GB), you need a 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB SDHC card. If your unit is very old, you may need to update firmware first. Assume 8GB SDHC is the sweet spot.
- Format: FAT32. Not exFAT. Not NTFS.
- Speed: Class 10 is fine, but Class 4 is more compatible. Avoid Ultra High Speed (UHS) cards if possible, as the RNS 315 has a slow bus speed.
The RNS 315 navigation system (found in VW, Seat, Skoda, and some Audi models) is showing its age. The V.4 map update is one of the last official releases, and using an SD card is the only practical DIY method. Here is the honest reality of the process.
