Cadence OrCAD 16.3

While there isn't one single "helpful story" for , the user community has shared several "lessons learned" and troubleshooting tales that serve as helpful guides for anyone still using this classic version.

  1. Archive the old environment: Save the entire project folder (.DSN, .BRD, .LIB, .OUT, etc.).
  2. Run DBDoctor: In OrCAD 16.3, run DBDoctor on your schematic and board files to fix internal corruption.
  3. Use “Save As” in newer OrCAD: Modern versions can open 16.3 files directly but will prompt a one-time upgrade of the database schema.
  4. Re-validate constraints: Electrical constraint sets (ECSets) often require re-mapping. Compare critical nets (clocks, differential pairs) manually.
  5. Regenerate outputs: Re-run DRC, re-generate Gerbers, and re-export BOM. Never trust old outputs from the legacy version after migration.
