Amazon’s production philosophy is different from Netflix: they want "tentpole event TV"—shows that drive conversation and Prime signups. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power cost $1 billion for five seasons. That is not sustainable for most studios, but for Amazon, it's a customer acquisition cost.
