You're referring to the "Dead Kings" DLC for Assassin's Creed: Unity!
Lantern Mechanics
: A new tool used to navigate pitch-black catacombs, solve light-based puzzles, and fend off swarms of bats or insects.
: Seeking a way out of France to Egypt, Arno is tasked by the Marquis de Sade to retrieve a manuscript from the tomb of Louis IX.
: Arno faces a group of "Raiders" sacking royal tombs and a more antagonistic Napoleon Bonaparte, both of whom are searching for a powerful First Civilization artifact—an Apple of Eden housed in a head-shaped lantern. Character Arc
In the winter of 2015, Ubisoft did something unprecedented. After the disastrous launch of Assassin’s Creed Unity —a game so broken it forced the company to apologize, offer free DLC, and temporarily halt season passes—they released Dead Kings for free. A peace offering. A tombstone on a troubled year.
- Frame Rate Stability: The original DLC suffered severe drops during the explosive Guillotine Gun fights. Today, on backward-compatible consoles, the game runs at a locked 60 FPS (or smoother). The "top" way to play is on a PS5 or Xbox Series X, where the density of Saint-Denis crowds no longer chokes the processor.
- Texture Pop-In Fixed: The infamous "clay face" bug is gone. The royal tombs now render fully without delay, preserving the eerie atmosphere.
- Save Game Corruption: The early DLC had a risk of corrupting your main game save. That is entirely resolved. You can now jump back and forth between Paris and Saint-Denis freely.
Franciade
Assassin's Creed Unity: Dead Kings is widely regarded as a significant expansion that provides a dark, atmospheric epilogue to Arno Dorian's journey. Released for free as an apology for Unity's technical launch issues, it shifts the setting from the bright, chaotic streets of Paris to the somber, fog-shrouded town of (modern-day Saint-Denis). Core Gameplay Additions
- PC/Steam: Right-click Unity in your library → Properties → DLC → Ensure "Dead Kings" is checked.
- Consoles: Go to "Manage Game & Add-ons" → Download the DLC (it is free).
